Heaters Tested

How we review & score

Our methodology is public, criteria-based, and applied identically to every heater we review — no shortcuts, no exceptions, no paid placements.

The Five-Step Review Process

Every Heaters Tested review follows the same five-step process. We document this publicly so you can see exactly how our rankings are produced — and so we hold ourselves accountable.

Category Selection

We choose heater categories based on what homeowners and renters actually search for and ask about. We don't write reviews for categories where we can't get real, lived-in experience, and we don't accept brand-suggested topics. If we haven't personally used it in a real home, we don't publish a verdict.

Shortlisting

We identify the top 8–15 candidate heaters in each category using:

  • Verified buyer reviews from major retailers (minimum 100 reviews per product)
  • Owner feedback and real-world complaints gathered from forums and reader mail
  • Manufacturer specifications and safety certifications (reviewed as the maker's own claims)
  • Input from our reviewers, who follow the heater market closely year-round

From this list, we narrow down to the final 5–7 heaters that will be used day to day in our homes.

Hands-On Home Use

We purchase or receive review samples of every heater (always disclosed). Our reviewers plug each one into real rooms — drafty bedrooms, home offices, garages, patios — and live with it for at least two full weeks, often longer. That means overnight runs, cold snaps, kids and pets around, and the kind of daily use that tells you things a quick look never would.

We read every owner review we can find and compare notes with each other before settling on a verdict. No heater gets a recommendation based on a single afternoon with it.

Note-Comparing & Scoring

After living with each heater, our reviewers compare impressions honestly — where they agreed, where they differed, and why. We score every product against the same criteria using a consistent rubric (see below). Scores are settled before rankings are assembled. We don't pick a "winner" first and work backwards.

Editorial Review & Publication

Every review is read over by our senior reviewer before it goes live. We check that claims match what we actually experienced, that safety notes are accurate, and that the tone is honest rather than just positive. Reviews are then revisited regularly — or sooner if something meaningful changes about the product.

Our Scoring Criteria

Each heater receives an overall score out of 10, built from weighted sub-scores. Weights shift slightly by category — for example, "overnight quiet" matters more for an oil-filled radiator in a bedroom than for a garage heater.

Why This Matters

Most "best heater" lists you find online are ranked by affiliate commission rates. Brands that pay higher commissions get listed first. We refuse to do that. Heaters Tested's rankings are determined exclusively by our scoring rubric, applied identically to every heater — paid or unpaid, well-known brand or underdog.

What We Don't Do

To keep our reviews trustworthy, there are several things we explicitly don't do:

How We Update Reviews

Heaters change. Models get discontinued, new versions appear, prices shift, and occasionally a safety issue surfaces after a product has been on the market a while. We revisit every published review on a regular basis, and immediately when:

Updated reviews always show the most recent revision date at the top of the article.
